2010 Collectors Seminar & Tour - Louisville, KY

GAS is thrilled to announce its 2010 Conference Collectors Tour of Louisville, Kentucky! This three and one half day tour is filled with Louisville's top private collections, renowned artists, special conference events, and unique visits to secluded spots, of which the region is most known. You will enjoy fabulous cuisine and be welcomed into this special Southern city where charm is a part of daily life.

The tour begins on Wednesday in the early afternoon with a private tour of the 21C Museum, located in your contemporary art-filled hotel. The hotel features a 9,000 square foot contemporary art museum funded and managed by the International Contemporary Art Foundation After getting insight into this 21st century collection, the tour will depart for a private reception at one of Louisville's special private glass collections. The tour will them move to a private glassblowing demo by internationally renowned artist, Richard Jolley.

The evening concludes with the Pre‐Conference Reception at the Speed Museum where a special exhibition of studio glass will be exhibited. Additionally, the Speed Museum’s extensive collection spans 6,000 years, ranging from ancient Egyptian to contemporary art. A beautiful dinner with a Kentucky flair and hosted bar will let guests enjoy the best of the Museum.

Wake up early because there is a full day ahead of you on Thursday morning as we take a drive to the
country. The morning will begin with a visit to Three Chimney’s Farm, one of the country’s top thoroughbred farms known for its exceptional stallions and Kentucky Derby winners: Seattle Slew
and Big Brown. After a tour of the farm you will depart for Lebrot & Graham’s Woodford Reserve Distillery to experience the crafting and learn a bit about real Kentucky bourbon.

Lunch will be taken on the bus as we head further South to Danville, Kentucky to Centre College to watch maestro Lino Tagliapietra and his team work. Lino has been visiting Centre College for a number of years and this is a very unusual and special opportunity.

After departing Centre College, the tour will visit the home and studio of local glass icon Stephen Rolfe Powell for some drinks and refreshments. This is a truly special collection filled with some of the top names in Studio Glass. The home is beautiful and the studio is a huge treat.

We have one more stop before returning to Louisville: Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. This will be a quick stop but one that should not be missed. Shaker Village is America’s largest restored Shaker community, where a remarkable society once flourished and where today, you can experience a true
national treasure. The tour will then return to the hotel where you will have a bit of downtime before dinner at Vincenzo’s, one of Louisville’s acclaimed restaurants, with the GAS Board of Directors.

Friday we’ll focus on Louisville and visit some of its most noteworthy private collections. Lunch will take place at Blu, located in the Marriott, so you can easily stroll over to the excitement of the 16th annual conference Goblet Grab. Following the Goblet Grab, the group will depart to visit more of Louisville's private collections. The day will end with the opening of the Student Exhibition and Gallery Hop. Dinner will be on your own this evening. This is a great opportunity to try some more local cuisine.

Saturday begins with more of Louisville’s private fine art and glass collections. Lunch will take place in the home of one of our incredible private collector hosts, where you’ll really get a taste of Southern hospitality!

The Collector’s Tour will then head back to the conference, as there are “can’t miss” presentations and talks. This is a great time to experience some of what the conference has to offer including a talk by famed artist Judith Schaechter, demo by Stephen Rolfe Powell and the Collector’s Panel, which includes some of the collectors you would have met throughout the week. There will be a small bit of free time Saturday afternoon and then the group will congregate for cocktails in the Marriott’s Presidential Suite, where you can mingle with artists in the Live Auction.

At 6 pm, the conference Live Auction begins and you’ll have the chance to bid on works chosen from some of the presenters in the 2010 Louisville conference, as well as other works donated by member artists of the Glass Art Society. The tour concludes with the Live Auction. We hope you saw all that you could see during your visit!
