ABOUT

Alva Gallagher’s work involves a continuous exploration of oceanic movements and elements. She began to explore the deep sea at a young age and adores the solitude and calm experienced in the depths of the water. She lives and works between her studio base in Ireland and Northern Canada. Alva has shown at Saatchi Gallery London; La Gallerie SEMA, Paris; ECB, Germany; Mall Galleries, London; European Glass Context Biennale, Denmark representing Ireland and various exhibitions globally in Tokyo, Berlin, Shanghai and The Central Academy of Fine Art, Beijing. She received the first Irish Scholarship to Pilchuck in Seattle, was the first recipient of the JimMcNaughton/TileStyle €10,000 Bursary Award and in 2012 was pre-selected for the prestigious Threadneedle Award, London. Including having work in State and International Collections comprising The National Museum of Ireland, The Deloitte Art Collection, BMW, The iconic 'Gherkin' building, London and the collection of Lady Dunraven, Alva has work in private collections throughout Europe, the US, Canada and Australia. She has been published in Modern Painter; ‘Engaging with Glass’ USA ISBN 978-0-9555120-6-3; EGC Biennale, Denmark ISBN 978-87-89059-79-2 and the upcoming contemporary sculpture book ‘CAST’ scheduled for release in early Spring 2017 by Shiffer Publishing NY, USA. I work predominantly with cast glass and am drawn to it for its unique manipulative states while molten; casting by way of lost wax technique into hand built moulds to describe oceanic themes and movements. It is my goal to challenge the parameters of this material and to engage people to experience this traditional applied medium as large-scale pieces and installations in new scenarios using traditional means. My work explores concepts of depth and rhythm through the medium of glass. Growing up in Ireland’s premier fishing port surrounded by the ocean has instilled in me a passion for the sea. I strive to mirror its characteristics of ferocity and serenity through my manipulation of my chosen medium in its molten state. This work is inspired by the continuous rhythm of ebb and flow of the ocean. It harnesses the intrinsic beauty of glass to capture a transient moment of tidal movement enticing the viewer to peer into its depths.
