See www.alvagallagher.com for further information. As an Artist I am very self critical and have a rigorous work ethic. My work is a continuous research of oceanic movements and elements. The dual qualities of ferocity and calmness of the sea are mirrored in the unique manipulative states of fluidity, solidity and transparency of glass as a medium. My works in glass are quite large in scale in order to capture a sense of the vastness of the sea. The sea can be very intimidating as can glass as a workable medium with its many complexities which I thrive on. What inspires me is the challenge of catching the ferocity of a wave or an upsurge of water, something that never stills, and freeze that movement in a piece while still maintaining the purity and simplicity of the movement. The technical challenges that arise with glass as a medium and the length of time involved in the process of casting within my studio, become a means of achieving a simplicity of form as I get so deeply involved in every stage of the development of a single piece. I cast and manipulate glass at the furnace and kilns within my studio, hot casting by way of lost wax technique and casting into hand built moulds. The characteristics of the ocean continually inspire me, particularly its unpredictability and perpetual rhythm. Alva Gallagher
