Letter from the President

What’s in Store for You in Australia

From the time, approximately 10 years ago, when Ausglass representatives approached GAS with an invitation to hold a conference in Australia, until now, much discussion, preparation, and enthusiasm has gone into bringing our 35th annual conference to fruition.

The Ausglass host committee in Adelaide chose the conference theme “Matters of Substance” in order to create a general undertone for the event that focuses on substantive issues.  Thus, developed from submitted proposals are presentations that address the issues you have indicated are important to you.  For example, diverse (and pithy!) panels such as “Bright Ideas,” “Collecting Criteria,” and “Critical Writing” have been assembled.

Because of the geographic location of this conference, we are taking advantage of the
opportunity to showcase and explore the glass scenes in several southern and southeastern Asian and Pacific Rim countries.  A variety of lectures offer contemporary and historical overviews of Japanese, Korean, Indian, and New Zealand glass-working.  Specific to Australia, the use of glass in current Aboriginal art is the topic of another presentation.

On the docket of demonstrators and artist lecturers are a plethora of new names and, as might be expected, many Australian artists.  Some of these artists already enjoy international notoriety, such as Klaus Moje, Ben Edols, and Jessica Loughlin, to name a few. Others highlighted are emerging, and certainly are deserved of a closer look at this conference.

Last but not least, other choice morsels this conference includes are lectures by this year’s award winners.  Richard Marquis will accept GAS’s Lifetime Achievement Award, quite appropriately in a country where he helped to initiate the current glass movement.  Lani McGregor and Dan Schwoerer of Bullseye Glass jointly will receive the Lifetime Membership Award, again aptly in a country where they have so successfully and benevolently championed its glass artists.

This conference is burgeoning with endless enticements.  Come join us down under and learn more about glass, travel, marvel at the Australian landscape, hold a koala, relish the wines, make new mates!

Anna Boothe, GAS President
