Cane Pick-Up
May 28 - June 2 – Taught by Davide Salvadore
Intermediate level students will learn Venetian cane pick-up techniques from an Italian master. Working with a thick iron plate, students will experiment with glass tessarae or cane, filigree, zanfirico and murrine. Some previous hot glass experience required.
Honeycomb Molds
May 28 - June 2 – Taught by Helen Stokes
In this course students will construct a layered mold using the honeycomb
mold technique. Through demonstrations and discussions students will understand the construction, usage and limitless possibilities of this unique process. Experienced casters and beginners will learn valuable mold making techniques from this course.
Intensive Flameworking Class Before GAS
May 28 - June 2 – Taught by Alex Arbell
Ignite your creativity with instant, stunning results. Create borosilicate
blown vessels, metal-patinated and decorated in the traditional Middle Eastern style and spirit with this master Israeli artist. Learn techniques of blowing glass into improvised self-produced molds, made from scrap-like nails, wires and wire nets, and pieces of metal tubes. Prerequisite: at least three years of extensive flameworking experience.
Lampworked Murano Glass on Copper Wire Interlaced with Silk
June 3-6 – Taught by Andrea Penzo
Learn the old Venetian technique of lampworking on copper wire to make
incredible compositions of various flowers, decorative objects, jewelry, and sweet boxes.
Text and Imagery on Glass
June 4-5 – Taught by Susan Taylor Glasgow
Apply images and text onto glass using printing techniques and photo
realistic sandblasting. Create images with wonderful depth and detail with a variety of low and high fire glass enamels.
Advanced Glass Blowing
June 4 -6 – Taught by Dante Marioni
Focus on sharpening off-hand glassmaking skills from a traditional
studio perspective, with a strong emphasis on Venetian glassblowing technique and teamwork. Pre-requisite: two years of hot glass experience.
Post-Conference Workshops:
Developing Vessel Making Skills
June 11-15 – Taught by Boyd Sugiki
Cylinders, bowls and bottles will be the point of departure for re-addressing the basics of vessel making. Traditional Venetian methods and other innovative techniques will be demonstrated. Pre-requisite: at least two years of hot glass experience.
Bent on Beadmaking
June 11-15 – Taught by Sage Logan and her son, Beau Anderson
For intermediate and advanced artists who wish to improve their skills in controlled patterning and unusual shapes. This class uses soft glass beadmaking inspired by ancient techniques that include surface decoration, clear casing, off mandrel, complex dot work, and the use of stringers, murrine, and other patterned cane. With two teachers, it will be possible for one-on-one time and individually paced skill levels.
Painting on Glass
June 11-15 – Taught by Walt Lieberman
Students will use both 3-D and flat glass to paint with enamels techniques, such as overpainting, sgraffito, and multiple firings used to achieve rich layered effects. No previous experience required.
“Stay in Pittsburgh” Tour June 10
Stay in Pittsburgh for an extra day to enjoy a special tour of the city, highlighting all that the city has to offer to artists who might consider moving here. This artist’s look at Pittsburgh will offer the opportunity to network with realtors and community developers who will provide leads and advise you about financing
opportunities. Meet with artists who have already made the move here and hear their success stories. The tour departs from the Omni William Penn at Noon, Sunday, June10, 2007. Pre-Conference Workshop: Electroforming June 6 – Taught by Ann Davis
Through demonstration, learn about the techniques and equipment for electroforming metals on glass, silver plating and gold pen plating. Ann’s work combines flameworking, electroforming, sandblasting and metalsmithing. Ann’s work has been published in books and journals. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally.
Post-Conference Workshop: Bullseye Box Casting June 10 – Demonstration by Judi Charlson
This demonstration will introduce you to much simpler methods of creating a reverse relief cast glass object with the optical clarity of a furnace casting, using plaster silica design elements in an open-faced mold assembled from vermiculite and other refractory materials. Emphasis will be on reverse kiln-casting in an assembled mold.
