Marmalade Burst

Tell us about yourself!
My name is Rick Eggert and I've been working in glass since 1992. I am from Southampton, NY but I started working with glass in Vermont. I currently reside in Florida where I operate a private studio and hold the positions of Creative Director and Glass Studio Director at The Benzaiten Center for the Creative Arts.

What draws you to the material you work with?
There are two aspects to glass that I love dearly. They are the limitless potential for shaping and forming glass, and the ability it has to keep me 100% in the present. Most simply though, I can say I truly enjoy the primal act of stretching, bending, and inflating molten glass.

What themes do you pursue in your work?
My current body of work explores the expression of motion and flow for which glass is a perfect material. The process of pulling and bending glass allows me to freeze a dynamic moment in time. I've been working on my current body of work for the last 8 years or so and I'll be exploring 2 new directions in 2017. No spoilers though!

What is your dream project?
My dream project is to have the land and the time to create the most surreal and fantastical house out of the most creative materials possible. I love looking at building homes as creating sculptures. I would rather live in a sculptural dwelling made with my own hands and elbow grease.

If you weren't working in this field, what career would you choose?
If I wasn't an artist would most likely be a skydiving instructor or a travel writer, or an engineer, or an etc... Too many cool things to do!

What's something about you that most people don't know?
I secretly desire to break the laws of physics and discover free energy.

Why are you a member of GAS?
I have enjoyed being a member of GAS for several reasons. Aside from actually feeling connected to the rest of the glass world, I start every Sunday morning going through the newsletter. The classifieds are a wonderful resource and I cannot tell you how many times I've been reminded about deadlines (Thank You!). I can't wait for the GAS conference in Virginia!
