Tell us about yourself!
My name is Scott Benefield and I currently have a glassblowing studio in Northern Ireland. I had studios in the Seattle area and New Orleans and before that I got my MFA from Ohio State University.

What draws you to the material you work with?
My work has focused on cane techniques for about 20 years now. I began with studies with Lino Tagliapietra in the 90s and it carried forward through production lines (Isola Glass, BTU Studio) and unique pieces that are sold in galleries. It’s also been the focus of my teaching practice for the past 12 years.

What themes do you pursue in your work?
There aren’t clearly stated themes per se, but rather a continuing and deepening interest in pattern generation and how they are created through differing processes.

What is your dream project?
Something close to what I did during the Corning residency in 2013, which involved both research into the development of Venetian cane techniques in the Renaissance using the Rakow Library, and practical experimentation in replicating and originating new patterns in The Studio. The history and culture of glassblowing remains a strong interest, but having the freedom to explore the material and investigate further permutations is still fulfilling.

Why are you a member of GAS?
I think membership in GAS has different benefits at different points in your career. When I was still a student, it helped me to create networks and seek out opportunities that were available through the conferences. But that changes over time and with the advent of new technologies. Membership is still a good way to keep abreast of changes in the field as a whole, but, as someone living outside in Europe also as a way to keep tabs on what’s happening in the US.
