Tell us about yourself!

My name is Robert Cappelli and I've been working with glass for about ten years. I recently received my MFA from California College of The Arts and I'm looking to teach and share this wonderful material with the rest of the world.

What draws you to the material you work with, and why have you chosen the processes that you use in your work?

In a nutshell, the most amazing thing about glass is its responsiveness. There have been many times where I've been blowing cups and I attempt to put the cup away as I have done many times before, and the punty will break and the piece will shatter. I love this about glass because it's almost as if the material is sentient and is actively saying NO. At this point I would like to think that I collaborate more with glass than use it.

What themes do you pursue in your work?

I enjoy studying glasses fragility and people’s reaction towards it. As a glassmaker, you should never get too attached to a particular piece because of its fragility, but it is captivating to see others invest massive amounts of fear for an object that can easily be made again.

What is your dream project?

My dream project is to fabricate a Chihuly chandelier and place it in a situation where it is likely to break and then observe people’s reactions to it. I've found that the bigger you get in scale, the more emotions a viewer is willing to invest in the piece.

What’s something about you that most people do not know?

One thing people do not know about me is my interest in music. I've been playing guitar for 18 years and drums for 15. I'm looking to incorporate more music into my practice.
