Like many people, I am enamored by the ocean, and in specific, the fabled ‘Island life’. The bright colors of island sunsets, the soothing colors and textures seen in their oceans, and the relaxation and freedom that a vacation in the islands promises inspires my work. The color palette now available in glass allows me to make works that recall many island scenes—the brightly painted buildings and lounging by the gently lapping sea under a coconut palm. With each technique I use with glass, I am afforded new ways to capture the essence of the islands. Working with hot glass from a furnace, I can create the sensuous curves reminiscent of the gentle patterns lit by the sun on the ocean floor. Finding just the right time to pull this section, and push that spot to make that specific swirl, makes every piece a one-of-a-kind work. With flameworking, I can make popular colorful fish and corals, and make up my own sealife. With coldworking tools, I can glue, cut, polish, and grind away glass to create entire underwater scenes, or combine colors and patterns to remind the collector of the avenues full of those wildly colorful painted houses. Shapes, textures and colors that evoke emotion, serene curves, energetic angles, uninhibited bright colors and unrestrained surface treatments are abundant in my work. When I look at my work, I want to imagine smelling the salt in the balmy air and sigh, “Ooh, I wanna go there. Again.” I graduated from Salem Community College in May, 2015 with an AFA in Glass Art and AAS Scientific Glass Technology. I look forward to nurturing my new career in the glass arts.
