Gayle Matthias



Gayle Matthias is BA Hons 3D Design Crafts Programme Leader at Plymouth College of Art, UK. A practicing glass maker, having exhibited nationally and internationally, Gayle has work in the permanent collections of the V & A, Musee de Vianne, Ebeltoft Museum of Glass amongst others. Previously, Gayle has worked in the Gallery Education Department at the Crafts Council UK, she has also been an artist in residence in France and at Bullseye Glass. Examples of her work can be found in many glass publications, most recently New Glass Review 34, 35 & 36. Gayle has worked in a wide variety of kiln-formed glass techniques for over twenty years. She has previously worked with Aron McCartney providing a case study for his PhD research on the adaption of traditional bronze casting ceramic shell investment molds for glass casting. Her studio practice deals with anatomical references through low tech assemblages focusing on the materiality of broken found objects, sheet and cast glass. Previously, she was engaged in collaborative research with Tavs Jorgensen (Research Fellow), investigating Rapid Tooling for glass casting moulds combined with digital technologies as part of the Autonomatic research group at Falmouth University. She is the co-author of papers presented at the GAS conference, Chicago 2014, ‘Making Futures’ conference in Plymouth, UK (2013), ‘Crafting the Future’, the 10th European Academy of Design (EAD), Gothenberg, Sweden (2013) and ‘Towards a New Ceramic Future’, research presentation at V & A, UK (2012).
