Aya Oki: 5 Day Intensive – Connecting with the Materiality of Glass | North Carolina Glass Center

5 day intensive with Aya Oki. March 16-20, 2026. When we see traditional techniques of glass blowing in general, the look, skill, design and so on are admired. However, when we really focus on the materiality of glass that we are most interested in, we see that it reveals a part of the medium we can’t observe without it. It emphasizes the materiality of glass. In this class, we will explore and investigate the materiality of glass to create our own sculptures in the hotshop and get inspired by the glass medium and process of learning and discovering the materiality and things about yourself.

This class is for beginner to advanced levels. Aya’s style is process oriented, focusing on why she chose glass as a material and what fascinates her about glass. Therefore, the classes are experimental and she encourage students to play with the glass material and listen to their curiosity. Techniques are important, of course, however, there is also the potential for students to discover new fascinations with glass, in hopes that they will continue to pursue these discoveries in the future.
