Translating Form to Glass: Casting Essentials with Josh Hargrave | July 26–31 | Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts

July 26 – 31, 2026 –Open to All Skill Levels

Overview

This workshop introduces students to the foundational processes of kiln casting glass, guiding them from initial form to finished sculpture. Students will experiment with a range of modeling materials to explore how different surfaces and structures translate into cast glass. The workshop will cover essential moldmaking techniques, from building the models to creating plaster molds, loading and programming the kiln, and divesting the finished cast.

Demonstrations will also address basic color application and finishing methods such as cold-working. In addition to individual projects, this workshop will create a collaborative sculpture by fusing multiple components into a single cast glass work, exploring inclusions and reinvestment. Students will leave with a cast glass artwork, test studies, and the practical knowledge needed to continue casting independently.
