Flame Work: Foundations for Creative Mastery | Agustina Ros

Monday 24 August – Thursday 27 August | 9:30am – 4:30pm

Manchester Metropolitan University, Ormond, Lower Ormond St, Manchester M15 6BX

This intensive hands-on course is designed to introduce students to the core principles of flameworking with borosilicate glass, while encouraging personal exploration through the development of original projects. Across several immersive days, participants will build a strong technical foundation and progressively apply these skills to create unique, contemporary glass pieces.

Throughout the course, the emphasis remains on learning by doing: gaining technical mastery, understanding material behavior, and exploring personal expression through hands-on creation.

Schedule

Day 1 and 2 — Introduction to Form and Structure

The class begins with an introduction to the basic principles of borosilicate flameworking. Students will explore modulation techniques and learn how to “draw in space” using curves, angles, and precise movements to shape the material. Through guided exercises, they will experiment with structural alternatives and aesthetic variations to create a glass chain. Participants will also be introduced to connection methods and network techniques, exploring the balance between stability and fluidity in glass forms. These sessions emphasize direct interaction with the flame, encouraging students to gain confidence and control over the material.

Day 2 and 3 — Blowing Techniques and Form Development

The focus then shifts to blowing techniques and form construction. Students will revisit essential technical principles for stretching and blowing borosilicate glass, exploring different options to create a variety of hollow shapes. Practical exercises will include creating holes, building clean and strong connections, and shaping complex forms with precision. Through these steps, participants will deepen their understanding of how heat, pressure, and movement define the behavior of glass.

Day 4 — Color and Surface Techniques

The final day introduces color application through rods, frit, and powder, as well as vaporization techniques. Students will experiment with layering and surface effects to enhance the expressive potential of their work.

About Your Tutor

Agustina is the founder of the Barcelona Glass Studio, offering classes to artists at different levels of their craft, as well as specialist masterclasses, and specialist courses exploring processes using other materials.

Agustina developed her personal body of work, which is defined by her special relationship with the material during the creative process. Blowing and modeling borosilicate glass through flame work, focusing on the interaction with light and space, and playing with the concept of time using old techniques, contemporary forms, and redefining tomorrow’s concepts.
