On this four day course, students will be diving into the world of glass fusing and painting to create a unique and individual final piece of 3D artwork to take home. Get ready to immerse yourself in a rainbow of colour and elevate your glass fusing skills with acclaimed glass artist Opal Seabrook.
You’ll explore how to create vibrant, graphic, 3D framed artworks in fused glass. Opal will share the unique techniques she has honed over a decade of artistic practice – including self-taught methods that have shaped her distinctive style.
You’ll begin by drawing out your designs, transforming them into stencils that will be used to accurately mark out onto Wissmach glass sheets. These shapes will then be cut out using both hand tools and a Taurus ring saw to make the impossible…. achievable! Then, discover how to add shading elements and intricate detailing with enamel techniques, including airbrushing, painting and line work. Your pieces will be kiln-fired up to 3 times before the final stage, when you’ll bring everything together to assemble your layered 3D masterpiece.
From concept to completion, Opal will guide you every step of the way. Prepare for a 3D creative explosion … Boom!
This class is for glass artists with some experience, and basic skills to cut sheet glass and some fused glass knowledge will help.
A self-confessed glass nerd with an endless imagination and excitement for my work, Opal loves storytelling, creating beautiful artworks with an interesting and sometimes dark back story, and using what people have called her quirky character to make people smile. She believes art is good for the soul and for mental well-being, and tries to bring art into as many people’s lives as possible.
Following a visit to Scotland many years ago, Opal discovered traditional stained glass making and fell – quite accidentally – into the wonders of glass art which quickly drew her in and began her journey into the art world. Through testing her ideas against traditionalist views, she’s developed her skills into fusing techniques, designing intricate and unconventional art. Opal’s ever-evolving style is inspired by a wide range of sources, including comic, pop art, nature, photography, and art in its wider context. She uses techniques such as airbrushing, powder printing, freehand painting, and sgraffito, prior to kiln firing, incorporating other materials alongside glass to ensure her creations are truly unique.
Opal has had work exhibited in galleries and museums, and it can be found in private collections across the globe. Her work has been selected for the British Glass Biennale in 2019, 2022 and 2024.
