I’m a flamework glass sculpture artist living in Florida that has been working in this medium for 36 years. I’m self-taught and know the challenges of starting without any knowledge of glass work, (flameworking specifically), schooling, or guidance in the beginning when I started in 1990. No video tutorials, online classes, or internet back then! Didn’t come from a family with the means to send me to school and back in 1990 I didn’t even know this type of work existed until I came across someone on a torch making glass sculpture in a local mall. I moved to the Virgin islands, opened a little glass shop at 19, and figured it out through the years through determination, passion and not ever stopping. Fast forward, and I’ve created a career, business, brand and entire lesson plan on how to break down the barriers or stumbling blocks of learning this unique artform for the average person who doesn’t know where to begin. I teach at the Morean Glass Studio in St. Petersburg, Florida when people live in the area, however, this leaves out anyone who doesn’t live near St. Petersburg, FL.
For the past 6 years since COVID, I realized I could film my techniques and try to make it simpler for someone to learn in the privacy of their own home, anywhere in the world. I recently released these virtual sessions on the Teachable platform.
Participants will receive guidance on selecting the appropriate torches, tools, and glass, as well as setting up a functional workshop. The series covers essential techniques that are necessary to acquire and practice in order to excel at making glass sculptures, from tiny jewelry to larger sculpture.
These virtual sessions go beyond standard online tutorials that simply show you how to make a single piece. Instead, I break down the “why” behind every choice—from the specific torches and glass I use to the precise arm angles and techniques required for success.
Over this 10-session course, you won’t just follow along; you’ll gain a deep understanding of the fundamentals and purposeful practice habits. By learning a wide variety of techniques and styles, you will build the skills and confidence needed to move past basic imitation and start designing your own unique glass sculptures.
