2020 Saxe Emerging Artists Award Winners

We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2020 Saxe Emerging Artists Award: Gracia Nash, Joshua Kerley, Nate Ricciuto.

Each year, the Glass Art Society selects a number of emerging artists through a rigorous, competitive, jury process. This year’s juror’s included Shari Mendelson, Maja Heuer, and Ryoji Shibuya. Those selected are asked to give a short presentation at the annual conference. Made possible by the Saxe Emerging Artists Lecture Fund, these presentations provide an opportunity for artists to introduce their work to a large audience of established artists, educators, peers, collectors, art historians, and critics.

When talking with Dorothy Saxe about this year’s program, she reflected that the award “gives young artists the opportunity to present their work at a conference – it gives [them] exposure… and people would be well to attend and hear the revolutionary ideas of these young artists.” We couldn’t agree more. Join us in Sweden for the 2020 Annual GAS conference and hear from the Saxe Emerging Artist Award Winners during their featured panel discussion.

About the Saxe Emerging Artist Award

Dorothy & George Saxe built one of the most premier contemporary glass collections found in the United States. Beginning their glass art collection in 1980, they supported artists, galleries, institutions, and have played an immense role in elevating and increasing appreciation of glass art. In 2015, the Saxe were honored by GAS for their service to the glass community. That evening marked the renaming of Emerging Artist Award and the foundation of the Saxe Emerging Artist Fund. What had in previous years been called the Emerging Artists Presentation, the SAXE Emerging Artist Award provides an opportunity for artists to introduce their work to a large audience of established artists, educators, peers, collectors, art historians, and critics.

Eligibility

Artists cannot self-nominate. Nominated individuals will be contacted directly by the GAS and invited to submit an application. Jury of professionals review all applicants and determine the presenters for that conference. Work submitted should display excellence in glass – with glass as the primary medium. It should be less than 12 years since the artist graduated with a bachelor’s degree, or artist is not currently enrolled in a program. Artists should not have presented at a past GAS conference (excluding panelists) and need to be available to travel to the conference.
