Glass Arts Instructor – Annette Howell Turner Center

The glass arts instructor is an outstanding artist and enthusiastic educator with a strong desire to enhance the program and foster excellence in our students. This individual must possess the knowledge, experience and confidence in glass as a medium to successfully manage the Richard Hill Glass Studio and professionally teach a variety of students from the local community and the surrounding areas. This position is supervised by the Art Education Administrator and Executive Director. A class schedule may involve working one or more of the following: weekdays, weeknights, weekends, special workshops, and camps.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Richard Hill Glass Studio, to include scheduling and planning, inventory management, maintaining studio equipment and tools, reporting maintenance and housekeeping issues, and other facility management tasks;
  • Provide instruction in at least glassblowing and flameworking – additional glass art mediums including copper foiled stained glass, fused glass, and others welcomed – to patrons of a variety of ages and skill levels, which involves instructing students in all aspects of glass, including materials, techniques (i.e., cutting sheet glass for fusing or copper foiling, soldering, etc.), safety, firing, and cleanliness;
  • Provide instruction based on any and all received grants for classes and programming, which could include scholarships for students and additional grant-funded compensation for the duration of applicable programming;
  • Coordinate with students to keep records of attendance and for student pickup of completed glass items;
  • Implement Turner Center class policy at all times;
  • Coordinate guest artists from outside the region 2-4 times a year for unique programming;
  • Provide a curriculum for regular class scheduling and any special workshops and/or camps, and coordinate class schedule with Art Education Administrator, taking into account all relevant forms of instruction, products, pricing, events, and other related tasks;
  • Report glass and materials supply needs and costs to Art Education Administrator and/or Executive Director as designated;
  • Manage all glass kiln and furnace firings (i.e. glass fusing/slumping, furnace glass melting, lighting gloryhole, proper annealing);
  • Oversee the proper maintenance of equipment and keep records of equipment repairs and factory warranties, and provide an annual written assessment of the facility and other assets;
  • Maintain an orderly, creative, relaxed and safe environment for students;
  • Oversee and inform other part-time instructors that may assist or substitute classes in the Richard Hill Glass Studio; and
  • Participate in various Turner Center events, including (but not limited to) ARToberfest, Spring into Art, and the Glass Invitational Exhibit, and provide public demonstrations and other patron and stakeholder interactions when needed.

Qualifications:

  • A degree in Art/Glass is preferred but not required. Equivalent experience will be evaluated by the Art Education Administrator and Executive Director.
  • Must have at least one year of prior teaching experience.
  • Must have experience in glass arts.
  • Must be able to provide a resume, references, and undergo a background check.
  • Must provide examples of artwork/student work.
  • Must have a friendly and positive attitude and be punctual and reliable.
  • Must take initiative in finding, suggesting, and enacting new ways to promote and expand the program.
  • Must have general knowledge of all glass art equipment and tools, including how to run and maintain a glassblowing/flameworking/fusion studio.
  • Must be able to problem solve and handle unexpected situations that may arise in the studio.
  • Willingness to be engaged in the community to expose the program to different audiences.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Instructor receives a 70/30 commission from student enrollment fees.
  • Instructor receives a studio management stipend monthly.

  • Instructor will be required to sell artwork in the gift shop on a 70/30 commission basis. This will be supervised by the Events & Member Relations Administrator.

  • Part time position, estimated salary 15-25K/year depending on the above commissions and stipend.
